Our pet can get into trouble and hurt themselves so it’s our duty to make sure we keep them safe at all times. Keeping them safe also means keeping ourselves and other little ones that may come around us safe as well. Here are ten things to do to keep your pet safe today.

  1. Keep all poisonous household cleaners locked away

It goes without saying that anything that is poisonous should be hidden away from the pet’s reach. Your pet can’t read labels to know that ingesting cleaners and eating cleaning agents is not safe and so if you don’t lock this away and they have access to it, this can potentially be fatal to them.

  1. Keep medications locked away

Like household cleaners, please keep all medication away and locked up. Your pet has not clue that just one or two tablets of Tylenol can take care of headache. If he gets a hold of your headache medication and eats up those tablets, it can potentially be fatal. So just like you would with kids and other people, keep your medications safely locked up.

  1. Keep electrical outlets hidden

Loose electrical wires and open sockets can be a source of hurt to most pets. If the pet steps on a live wire or spills water on one, this can be dangerous. Or if a pet sticks the wrong thing into an open socket, that could be a problem as well. So, make sure you take a hard look around you and close up any electricals that can be a source of injury to your pet.

  1. Close up small spaces

It goes without saying that if they can squeeze in there, they will try to do just that. So, if there are tiny exposed places in your house, close them up or at least block them up so your pet doesn’t crawl into that space and get hurt. If it looks like somewhere to play hide-my-toys, your pet will do just that.

  1. Expose to sunlight when possible

Keep your house aired out and if possible, make sure you place the pet’s usual resting location close to the sun or window. Pets also like to look outside so if you have a warm place with a window, your pet will love chilling there and making themselves warm while they get a healthy dose of the sun.

  1. Keep your home well ventilated

Much like exposing pet to sunlight, making sure your home is properly ventilated in important for recycling air. Even making sure your home is at the right temperature can keep the pet safe, especially if they are home for some hours alone when you’re out. You don’t want a very cold or very hot house as this can be dangerous for the pet.

  1. Keep sharp objects away

This is certainly common sense and like the hiding dark places or distracting you pet from places they can get stuck in, hiding sharp objects or keeping them out of reach is very important. You don’t want your pet climbing up your kitchen counter, toppling things over only to be hurt by something sharp that could have been prevented.

  1. Keep traps hidden

If you have traps to catch pests or for other reasons, your own pet falling into that trap or getting caught by that trap could be a big problem. So, say you have a trap to catch a field mouse, you need to be aware that your pet might be drawn to that trap and this can hurt them as well. So, think carefully about where you place traps in your hose to make sure your pet is not hurt in the processes as well.

  1. Keep food that can be harmless hidden

Your pet can’t eat everything you can eat. Sometimes, they just can’t ingest it, or sometimes, that your food contains is not right for their body. But they might not know this and the other people in your house might not know this either. So, keep food that can be dangerous to your pet hidden away and let other people that are in contact with the pet including the pet sitter and guests to you home to avoid feeding them certain things that could be hurtful, or even fatal to them.

  • Know your pet’s allergies

Pets have allergies, very much like humans. So, be aware of your pet’s allergies and make sure you don’t expose them to things they are allergic to because just like in humans, eating or being close to things they are allergic to can also be fatal to them. Your vet should be able to help you recognize your pet’s allergies if any so that you can protect them from things that can hurt or even be fatal to them.
